For years we thought we were making people feel welcome. God was gently teaching us something much deeper. Long before we ever opened our front door, He had already opened His. Every greeting, every cup of coffee, every cinnamon roll, every chair pulled up to the table became a quiet reminder that the first act of disciplemaking has always been God’s hospitality. That is why those mornings felt so natural. We weren’t creating welcome. We were participating in His. Nothing about those mornings felt hurried. No one seemed anxious to move everyone to the next thing. We saw God quietly teaching us that love has a different pace. Hospitality lingers. Friendship listens. Grace is rarely in a hurry. Coffee cups found nearby tables. Someone read the passage aloud. Then, together, we paid attention. Not as students gathering around an expert. Not as people trying to impress one another with what we already knew. We were friends learning to recognize God’s presence together. There was no hurry. There was no pressure to have the right answer. Because, over time, we had begun to discover that good questions often helped us notice what hurried answers quietly passed by. No one owned the conversation. Everyone received from it.
