Like many people, we focused almost entirely on the message. We studied doctrine, Scripture, and the teachings of God because we wanted to understand His truth as clearly and faithfully as we could. We believed that if people could hear, understand, and remember the truth, their lives would be changed. And rightly so. God’s truth is eternal. It deserves our deepest attention, our most careful study, and our faithful obedience. What we failed to notice wasn’t the truth. It was the way God so often chose to deliver it. Somewhere along the journey we began to recognize a pattern that had been hiding in plain sight. God rarely delivered His truth in isolation. Instead, He entrusted it to people who walked with others. When He wanted to bless the nations, He didn’t begin by writing a book. He called Abraham. When He wanted to rescue Israel, He raised Moses. Joshua learned by walking beside Moses. Elijah prepared Elisha. Naomi quietly shaped Ruth. Barnabas believed in Saul before many in the church were ready to trust him. Paul and Timothy poured into each other. Truth traveled through trusted relationships. We’ve often treated truth as though it travels best through information. Scripture repeatedly shows it traveling through faithful friendships. That doesn’t make relationships more important than truth. It does remind us that relationships are often one of God’s chosen ways of delivering truth.
