Then Jesus arrived. And the pattern didn’t change. If anything, it became even simpler and more beautiful. When we picture Jesus making disciples, many of us instinctively imagine lessons, sermons, and miracles. The Gospels certainly include all of those. But before we ever hear the Sermon on the Mount… before the sending of the Twelve… before the feeding of the five thousand… before the Upper Room… John quietly invites us to a wedding. Not a classroom. A celebration. Jesus is there with His mother. His newly gathered disciples are there with Him. Families are laughing. Friends are talking. Meals are being shared. Life is unfolding in all its ordinary beauty. We began noticing that Jesus rarely hurried His friendships. He spent extended time with people. Shared life wasn’t squeezed between ministry. It was much of the ministry. The kingdom of God doesn’t interrupt those ordinary moments. It grows within them. He taught while they walked dusty roads. Questions arose over meals. Conversations unfolded beside fishing boats. Truth emerged around campfires. Lives were transformed in homes, at weddings, along roadsides, in synagogues, and around tables. Shared life wasn’t the interruption to His teaching. Shared life was the environment in which His teaching came alive.
The challenge
Treat one ordinary moment this week—a meal, drive, walk, or interruption—as a place where Jesus may already be forming someone.
