Haver. The word is often translated as friend, companion, or associate. But none of those English words quite capture its richness. Haver is more than a friend. More than a teammate. More than a companion. A haver is someone with whom life is intentionally shared as you both learn to walk toward God. As we explored Jewish learning, synagogue life, and the ministry of Jesus, we discovered that people rarely pursued God’s truth in isolation. They wrestled with it together. Remembered it together. Lived it together. Years ago we often described Haver as two or three friends opening the Scriptures together, encouraging one another, sharpening one another, and honestly wrestling with how God’s Word should shape their lives. Over time we realized something even deeper. We weren’t only grappling with Scripture together. We were learning to recognize God’s presence and pay attention to Him together. Eventually we found ourselves describing Haver this way: Haver is friends paying attention to God together. Not only paying attention to a lesson. Or a teacher. Or even a curriculum. Paying attention to God—together. That one sentence has become the heartbeat of this entire project.
