Read 2 Corinthians 1:20-22.
Have you ever put down a deposit? Why was it important to secure that item with a deposit?

What do you notice about the way Paul talks about the Spirit as a deposit?

Read Ephesians 1:11-14. Why does Paul tie in both God’s past actions and His future actions here? What does he want you to understand?

What aspect of the Holy Spirit’s guarantee makes you the most grateful?

What word would you use do describe how confident you feel in your relationship with God? Why?

How might you live differently if you were aware of Spirit’s guarantee at all times?

Pray: Thank God for his securing you with the deposit of the Holy Spirit. Ask him to help you discover ways to live more aware of your value to him. Invite God to increase your confidence as you allow him to draw you into an even more surrendered and dependent life today.

Read Romans 8:19-27. What does it mean that the Spirit intercedes for us?
Why is it significant that He intercedes for us “in accordance with God’s will”?

Have you ever felt like your prayers came from somewhere besides your own ideas? For example? What was it like to experience God’s prompting?

What do you most appreciate about the Holy Spirit’s role as Intercessor?

Read Ephesians 6:10-18. What does it look like to pray “in the Spirit”?
What does praying in the Spirit have to do with spiritual warfare and the armor of God?
How does it change the way we intercede for others?

How can you more intentionally develop a prayer life that invites the Spirit?

Pray: Include silence and listening in your prayer moment. Just hang in God’s presence. Thank God for his providing a translator between your heart and your prayers—the Holy Spirit. Ask for God’s help in hearing his quiet voice of prompting as you pray and walk through today. Invite God to lead you in prayer through his Spirit as a regular part of your conversations in prayer.

What does it mean to be an heir of God?
Do you see yourself more as the slave, child, or heir? Why?

Read Ephesians 2:18. How does the Spirit give us access to God?
How would our relationship to God be different without the Spirit?

In what ways can you most clearly see God as a Father?
Are there any obstacles that need to be overcome in your life to help you see God as the perfect Father?

How does your access to the Father through the Holy Spirit change the way you interact with Him?

How close do you feel to your Father right now? How can that intimacy deepen?

Pray: Thank God for his being all consuming awesome! Stop and reflect on the way the Holy Spirit connects you to God as your “daddy.” Express praise for your connection and access to your heavenly Father through the Holy Spirit. Ask for God to prompt you in ways that you can spend more time with Him to allow your intimacy with him to deepen.

Read Ephesians 3:14-21. The word power is used three times in this passage (in the NIV). What does each reference tell us about the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives?
What is the ultimate goal of everything He enables us to do?

Have you ever seen the Holy Spirit do something powerful through you? For instance...

What things do you find easiest to rely on your own strength to accomplish?

What is something only God could do in your life? Do you trust him with this area of your life? Why or why not?

What does it mean for you to be and remain dependent on the Spirit? What is one way that you see yourself growing in your willingness to remain dependent on the Spirit’s timing and provision?

Prayer: Thank God for the Holy Spirit’s role in your life today! Ask him to make you more aware of the ways the Holy Spirit is working God’s power through you. Thank him that he is at work in ways that only he can work in your life. Ask God for greater patience as you rest in the work that he is doing with His power in and through you.

How does an understanding of the Spirit’s work change the way you view that pursuit?

In what ways do we sometimes hinder the Spirit’s work of sanctification?
How can we best cooperate with Him in His work?

Pray. Thank God for his initiative to make you holy. Thank God for the way the Holy Spirit draws you close to Him. Ask him to help you cooperate with the change process that he is taking you through right now.

What does your time with God normally look like?

Have you ever “wasted time” with God, sitting or walking in silence just to enjoy His presence? Where? When? Journal a memory of “wasting time with God:”

What steps can you take to develop a heart that listens to the Spirit?

Is there anything you feel Him calling you to do but haven’t acted on?

Pray: Thank the Lord for giving His Spirit as counselor. Ask him to draw you into obedience. Ask him to develop in you a heart that listens to Him.

Assignment: Take 15 minutes at an “odd time” in your day to “invest time” in God’s presence.

How do you know if the Holy Spirit is in you?

Have you ever felt His presence or power in you? How did you know?

Read 1 Corinthians 6:18-20. How does God’s Spirit living in you practically change your life? Name one thing that has changed in your life because of the Spirit in you.

Is there any way in which you know you are not living as a good temple of His presence?

Pray: Thank the Lord for giving His Spirit to live in us and for allowing us to live in Him. Be specific in reflecting over the gift you’ve received. Ask Him to show you if there is anything you need to surrender in order to give yourself more fully to Him. Pray that you might live like someone filled with His Spirit.
